The balance of this review will now focus on the Magnepan MG1.7i speaker. However, a number of the themes outlined previously are very applicable to the 1.7i and touch directly on the speaker’s remarkably lifelike sound (and “lifelike” is perhaps the most noteworthy attribute that can be bestowed on an audio component).

In 2013, ATC delivered the current, third generation SCM7 that you see before you, this was the first to feature the company’s own tweeter, developed in-house by Richard Newman, alongside a proprietary ATC mid/bass driver. It was also the first showing of the formed and laminated curved side cabinet that is now seen across the SCM range and developed to increase both stiffness and damping, not to mention reducing internal reflections.

The Electrocompaniet Tana SL-2 is designed for use in a smaller room, maybe as a second system in a bedroom or kitchen, or you can set them up around the house as a multi-room system. Although compact I found the Tana, particularly in its two speaker stereo configuration, worked well even in the large, high ceilinged living/listening room that we have downstairs.
I must admit to being someone who never used to enjoy hearing the words ‘wireless’ and ‘speaker’ used in close proximity. The market is full of cheap, almost disposable, options, however, the Electrocompaniet offering is in the class of the likes of the iFi Aurora, Devialet Phantoms and Naim Musos, being a high-quality build with ‘proper’ HiFi credentials.

The 8-cm woofer unit offers significantly better basic characteristics as a result of various improvements made, such as the reduced weight of the voice coil, enhanced airflow and increased rigidity of the diaphragm. The woofer provides superb response and sound clarity to reproduce mid- and high-frequency sound comfortable to the ear. The high-res-ready 2-cm dome tweeter unit features a lighter silk diaphragm to provide beautiful lingering sound. What’s more, the acoustic lens is optimised for the new tweeter shape and enhances the expansiveness of reproduced sound.

At this point, everyone knows Technics is back.The venerable Japanese turntable manufacturer’s SL-1200G dropped several years ago to near-universal fanfare, and the company has since released several less expensive ’tables. But it’s the non-DJ-styled SL-1500C ($1199) that feels like the most exciting of the lot. Its price is the most accessible, of course, and it retains many of the bones of Technics’ upmarket decks. Despite its simplistic appearance, the 1500C is packed with serious tech, including a new coreless direct-drive motor, which is a huge selling point, along with a built-in phono- stage and a very solid tonearm.

Founded in England in 1974 by Aussie Billy Woodman (who is still its prez and chief designer), Acoustic Transducer Company, best known by their initials, ATC, started out making custom loudspeaker drivers for recording studios. They made their first complete speaker system in 1978, introduced a compact consumer monitor in 1990, and in 1996 launched a proprietary “super-linear” magnet design to minimize the adverse effects of hysteresis (see sidebar, “Hysteresis”). Today, ATC is the best-known and most respected pro speaker company in Europe, where their clients include every major audio name.

The REL S/812 forms part of the pretentiously titled Serie S range of subwoofers, but never a company to do things by half, the latest additions are a total transformation of REL’s mid-sized class of subs. As a result, unlike the previously released 212/SE, the new S/812 represents a complete revision of the line-up that adds new upgrades and design features.
For a start, the cabinet has been revised, and the feet replaced with rails. The NextGen5 amplifier has also been upgraded to deliver more power, and the ultra-lightweight ContinuousCast alloy cone redesigned to handle the increase in slam. Improved filters tailor the LFE channel to deliver twice the output between 19 and 35Hz, while the high-level and low-level inputs use a new PerfectFilter. Finally, these redesigned subwoofers can also be stacked up to three units high.
The REL S/812 has a completely redesigned cabinet that is lower, wider and deeper, using dimensions based on the company’s Reference Series. The build quality is superb, and despite essentially being a cube, the S/812 is unusually attractive for a subwoofer. This is the kind of sub you wouldn’t mind having on display, rather than hidden away in a dedicated home cinema.
