ATC SCM 40A RECENZIJA V 13TH NOTE
Following concerted listening over a week I highlight the main sonic USPs in bold, as ever. The thing that smacks you in the face with these speakers first is the way music is exquisitely integrated and balanced. Like music you’d take to a desert island akin to Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, these are really a pair of speakers that represent the best of what is easy to live with.

Ok so you sometimes risk credibility to sceptics by giving such positive praise. But I’ve no compunction flouting the praise of these speakers and being confident doing so, such is how shudderingly brilliant they are. Caliban’s Dream by Underworld on The London Olympics 2012 soundtrack sounds enveloping like nobodies business and the bass line reflects how realistic these speakers can be. Conclusion >>> The SL-1210GAE is a limited edition with most going to Europe so if you want one, grab it while it’s available. When I think of what else is available at the price point, there is some good competition, but none built to this quality level. Built well, sounds and measures well and looks smart. Pair with an appropriate cartridge and you’re good to go.

I’ve been a huge fan of power conditioners since a salesman plugged in an early MIT(I forget the model, but is was 5K in the early ‘90s) and it transformed the system I wasauditioning in a Queen St, Toronto store—an area known for crap power. Night and day. Of course, some conditioners I’ve heard, especially those not considering an amplifier’s high current needs, choked the life out of the sound. Happily, the AudioQuest Niagara Series has a wonderful consistency. Source or amplification, your gear is going to be treated with kid gloves.

Verdict >>> It’s not an uncommon recipe – integrated, hybrid, with loads of options – but the execution of this fabulous-sounding amplifier means that the Mimas is a triumph, and must be added to any shortlist of sub-£10k all-singing/all-dancing amps. Yes, the utterly non-intuitive, inspired-by-Klingon iconography is frustrating, but that’s a bonus: your headphone-attired kids won’t be able to tamper with it.
